Temporary Chaperone Policy

It has been a very active summer at Van Aken District. With increased crowds, particularly in the evenings, managing unchaperoned minors has become more challenging than in previous years. To help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors and merchants, the Van Aken District is implementing a Temporary Chaperone Policy beginning August 1 through Labor Day (September 1):

• After 8:00 PM, anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or adult age 25 or older
• One adult may accompany up to four minors
• Applies to all areas of the Van Aken District, including Shaker Plaza
• Employees under 18 are exempt during their scheduled work hours
• Minors actively dining, shopping, or waiting in line after 8:00 PM may remain until their activity is complete

This policy was created in partnership with the City of Shaker Heights and the Shaker Heights Police Department, and will remain in effect through the end of the busy summer season.
