CODE OF CONDUCT

The Van Aken District is the premier destination for unique retail, delicious eats and family friendly entertainment. Located in Shaker Heights, known for its welcoming and engaged community, the Van Aken District expects visitors to maintain a community space that is positive, friendly, and respectful.

The buildings, parking garage, and the Living Room Park are privately owned, and Jason’s Park on a portion of Tuttle Road in front of the Market Hall that is closed during summer months (as well as certain other areas during special events) is subject to private control through a license. The Van Aken District reserves the right to define the rules of conduct acceptable for admission to these areas of the Van Aken District. Failure to comply with the rules and regulations, as well as Federal, State, and local laws, is grounds for immediate removal from these areas of the District, and potentially banning, arrest and/or prosecution for criminal trespass.

THE FOLLOWING CONDUCT IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED:

  • Loud, disorderly/disruptive conduct is prohibited, including:
    • Yelling, screaming, and shouting
    • The use of obscene or insulting language and gestures
    • Playing music without the use of headphones
    • Possession of any item that is commonly used as a weapon to inflict injury, such as firearms, explosives, knives, etc. This includes but is not limited to any object that can be construed as a weapon, such as replica guns (airsoft, paintball, cap, orbeez, squirt guns, etc.)
    • Running, wrestling, fighting or boisterous behavior
    • Skating/rollerblading, skateboarding, riding bicycles, hoverboards or scooters, including in the parking garage or through pedestrian areas
    • Operating drones without prior permission of property management.
    • Littering, throwing objects, defacing/destroying property, climbing on furniture, walls, trees or in garden areas
    • Congregating in large groups that blocks sidewalks, stores, restaurants, retail and business entrances, parking areas or common areas
    • Loitering, solicitation
    • Picketing, rallying, conducting surveys, distributing literature, soliciting signatures, except in areas designated by property management

FOR RESPECT OF OTHERS AND YOUR SAFETY, THE FOLLOWING IS NOT ALLOWED:

  • Inappropriate attire including offensive messages, gang signs/symbols or graphics on clothing
  • Apparel that covers the face, except medical face masks or face coverings worn for cultural or religious reasons
  • Visible undergarments or inappropriate clothing that shows excessive areas
    of skin which may be viewed as inappropriate in a family friendly environment
  • Tactical vests or body armor worn by anyone other than police/security officers contracted by The Van Aken District
  • Illegal activity
  • Shirts and shoes must be worn while at The Van Aken District

DESIGNATED OUTDOOR REFRESHMENT AREA (DORA) GUIDELINES:

  • Patrons aged 21 and over may purchase and carry alcohol from DORA participating restaurants within DORA boundaries. Guidelines are as follows:
    • DORA will be in place from April 1 through October 31 each year
      • Sunday: 12PM – 10PM
      • Monday-Thursday: 4PM-10PM
      • Friday-Saturday: 12PM-12AM
    • In addition, we may enact the DORA outside of the prescribed hours of operation with approval from the City of Shaker Heights Mayor and Chief of Police
    • Stay within the designated DORA boundaries and do not go past posted DORA signs
    • Alcohol may only be consumed from an approved DORA plastic cup
    • DORA beverages can be consumed within retail establishments that have the DORA logo displayed on their door
    • All State of Ohio and City of Shaker Heights laws regarding public intoxication, impaired driving and open containers apply to inside and outside areas of DORA boundaries
    • ALWAYS drink responsibly and behave appropriately

PARKING:

  • Parking is permitted in designated parking spaces only
  • No waiting in fire lanes, loading docks or double parking
  • No overnight parking – failure to comply with this may result in a ticket or removal of vehicle at the owner’s expense
  • No cruising, drag racing, spinning tires, speeding or loud car stereos
  • No loitering in vehicles
  • Park at your own risk. The Van Aken District is not responsible for theft or damage to your vehicle

PET POLICY:

  • Well behaved dogs are welcome at The Van Aken District
    • Only service dogs are allowed inside the Market Hall
    • Always keep your dog on a leash or in a carrier and under your supervision

    • Clean up after your dog. There are clean-up bags and waste receptacles around the District for your convenience

    • The owner of or the person with a misbehaving animal will be asked to take the animal and leave

The Van Aken District is a vibrant destination to live, work and play and we want it to be enjoyed by all our guests. Anyone vandalizing the property or creating a panic situation will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
